FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you offer marine survey services Australia-wide?

Yes, Salus Maritime operates from Hobart, Tasmania, and serves clients across Australia. Salus also consults a number of international clients and has performed international contracts. Whether your vessel is in Sydney, Melbourne, or overseas, we have the expertise and network to conduct thorough inspections and consultations wherever needed.

What is a marine survey, and why is it important

A marine survey is a detailed inspection of a vessel to assess its condition, safety, and value. This is crucial for buyers, insurers, and owners to understand the vessel’s state and to prevent costly repairs or safety issues. Salus Maritime’s marine surveys provide clear, comprehensive reports for recreational and commercial vessels.

What types of surveys does Salus Maritime provide?

We offer a range of marine surveys, including pre-purchase vessel inspections, insurance risk surveys, AMSA DCV initial and renewal surveys, periodic surveys, damage claims surveys, and valuation surveys. Our goal is to ensure your vessel meets all necessary safety standards and operational requirements. For a full list of surveys check out MARINE SURVEY

How can a pre-purchase marine survey help me?

A pre-purchase marine survey inspects the vessel’s hull, deck, machinery, and equipment to provide a clear picture of its condition and value before you buy. This helps prevent unexpected issues and ensures you’re making an informed investment in your vessel. A pre purchase survey virtually pays for itself as a tool to negotiate the final price you are willing to pay for the vessel.

What is the cost of a survey

The cost of a survey vary depending on the size, type, construction and purpose of the survey. A reliable estimate can be found on the MARINE SURVEY page. Whilst the cost of a survey may seem significant there is no doubt that it will save you money in the long run. Pre purchase surveys will provide you with a full understanding of what you are buying and a list of items that could be negotiated when discussing the purchase price.

I have been around boats all my life. Why would I hire a surveyor when I can do it myself

Surveyors look at different boats (and problems) every day. Surveyors know what to look for, and have special tools to quantify, test and prove their observations. Even if you know a lot about boats it dosn’t hurt to have a second set of eyes take a detailed look using some sophisticated equipment and a trained eye.

What is Non Destructive Testing and what are its advantages

Non Destructive Testing NDT utilises technology to test more than the naked eye can observe. Utilising the latest technology in ultrasonic testing, penetrative dye, Tramex moisture meter and thermal imaging TIR technology we can check the integrity, thickness and moisture content of Timber, GRP, Carbon, Composite, Aluminium, Steel and HDPE.

NDT identifies faults such as water damage, osmosis, corrosion, cracking, delaminated fiberglass, moisture, rotting core structure, without the need to hammer on the hull, drill holes, remove fixtures, fittings, linings or risking damage to the vessel. NDT can even identify dampness and mold inside the vessel that can not be seen by the naked eye.

By identifying hidden problems using NDT technology combined with expert knowledge we save boat owners thousands of dollars, hours of their time by ensuring structural integrity and watertightness of all vessels we survey ensuring your health and safety.
